Education Programs

Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District has been providing free water education programs to local public and private schools for several years. A component of Public Affairs, this program supplies water education materials, resources, tours and classroom presentations. In addition, please take a look at the many science projects ideas available.

Classroom Presentations Two classroom presentations are offered:Water is Peter's Best Friend flannel board presentation is for grades K-3 and is a story about Peter and his love of water, Willy the water drop takes Peter through the water cycle where they discover all the different forms of water and that all living things need water. Standards covered include K-Second physical science, life science, earth science and investigation. Program length is approximately 45 minutes. Project Wet is for grades 4-6 and includes a one-hour demonstration of one of our three local water sources, groundwater. Water cycle, pollution, watershed protection, water well hydrology and water recycling issues are covered. State standards include physical science, life science, earth science, investigation and experimentation. Presentations includes classroom materials and hand-outs. Consecutive presentations can be arranged. Presentations can be tailor made according to the instructor’s subject matter or area of interest.
 EVMWD staff attends site career day events and participates in the many community outreach events.
Annual Mini-Grants for Teachers This program is cosponsored by EVMWD and other local utilities through the Water Education Advisory Council of western Riverside County. Designed to fund classroom or school projects that further a better understanding of water and the vital role it plays in our community, the mini-grant program awarded a total of $6,000 to instructors this year. Grant program summary:
- Grant amounts: Up to $700
- Goal: To enable primary and secondary educators to develop original water education lessons, experiments or projects for K–12 students.
- Entry qualifications: Individual instructors, teams, or school sites may apply.
- Application deadline: Watch school mail for application forms and entry guidelines.
Theater Performances Annual theatrical performances focusing on water issues and water conservation are offered to primary classes at local elementary schools. The theater program features Kathy Whalen and her magic show. Kathy is a former school teacher and graduate of the Institute for Children’s Literature. Performances are reserved on a first-come-first-served basis.

Water Education Materials An array of materials featuring the water cycle, water conservation, and the water history of Southern California tailored to primary and secondary grade levels. Instruction booklets, teacher guides, videos, posters and stickers tie directly into the science, history and social science curriculum frameworks. Professional Development Earn professional development credits by enrolling in an independent study course called “Teaching Southern California’s Water Story.” The class is fast-paced, comprehensive and it ties into the History and Social Science Frameworks for California public school. Students explore a local mission and visit a key water facility. Student workbook, reference materials, video and a cassette featuring song from California’s past and an interview with Catherine Mullholland. This class is now available in an online class format. Regional Programs A participant in the Water Education Advisory Council, Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District offers poster contests for fifth grade, science fair awards, an extensive book donation program, teacher mini-grants, a theater program and an explorer badge program. Click here for more information Tours One-hour tours to the EVMWD District headquarters are available normally Tuesday through Thursday before 3:00 p.m. Due to additional security measures, tours to the water treatment plant and wastewater treatment plants are only arranged on a case by case basis. Tours are offered to Grades 4-6 at these locations: District Headquarters, Regional Water Reclamation Plant, Water Treatment Plant. Maximum tour size varies with destination.
Scouts The H2O Explorer Badge Program is a free program for children attending private and home schools, boy and girls scout troops, YMCA and YWCA groups.
